Reports – Warriors, Coach, Antipas, Instructed To Leave Out Certain Players

The Herald reported that secret sources said that new Zimbabwe Senior Warriors coach, Joey Antipas, was 'forced' through instruction by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to leave out some usual first team players in the provisional squad for the preliminary round FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifier against Somalia to be played early in September.

Usual Zimbabwe Senior National Soccer team captains who were part of the 2019 AFCON finals squad Ovidy Karuru, Danny Phiri, and currently all time Zimbabwe's second top goal scorer, Knowledge Musona were unnamed in the provisional squad for the match against Somalia.
Top goalkeepers, Edmore Sibanda and George Chigova were also left out of the Zimbabwe Warriors squad including other players.
Football circles believe that the players might have been left out for protesting against the board at the just ended AFCON 2019.
"Joey Antipas told the ZIFA officials that they have to address that issue because it was their call and, in return, the ZIFA officials said the coaches should provide an explanation which didn’t trigger any controversy.
"The coach felt it would be unfair for him to say something that wasn’t true because he knew these were not just fringe players and this is also a World Cup qualifier.
"So, there was a deadlock, but everyone knew that this issue would come up, the questions about why some of the regulars were not in the squad."
However, Xolisani Gwesela, who's ZIFA'S spokesperson said that it was coach, Joey Antipas', choice to leave out the players from his squad.
Zimbabwe plays Somalia on the 2nd and the 10th of September.
