Esperance African Champions again - but Wyad causes match to be abandoned after a denied goal

Esperance (Tunisia) are the Champions of African Club Football for the 2018/19 after beating Wydad Casablanca in the Total Caf Champions League Final played Yesterday in Tunisia.

The Caf Champions League is the biggest football club competition in Africa and the winner is awarded a trophy, and US$ 2.5 Million among other things.

Es Tunis' victory over Wydad Casablanca in the final means the club retains the African Champions League Trophy from last season (2017/18). And it the fourth club since the start of Caf Champions League in 1950 to retain the trophy.

Es Tunis' Mohamed Youcef Belaïli scored the winning goal in the 41st minute from an assist by Ben Mohamed and Wydad failed to find an equaliser.

However, the match was marred by bizarre scenes, after Wydad's 59th minute 'goal' was disallowed and the the team walked off the pitch when the referee refused to consult the Video Assistant Referee.

The effort that resulted in the back of the net came from Wydad's Ismail El Haddad.

The referee Bakary Gassama disallowed the goal due to an alleged 'foul' in the goal's build up.

And in a protest, Wydad Casablanca's players, and coaching staff came onto the pitch for a word with the referee and at the same time Es Tunis' supporters were throwing missiles at the Wydad's bench.

The match had to be abandoned after 25 minutes of trouble, and the referee declared ES Tunis winners
