Mhofu Aiming to go past group stages with the Warriors at Afcon 2019

Africa Cup of Nations 2019 Preview

This year's Africa Cup of Nations marks the fourth time, the Zimbabwe Senior Men's National Team will be taking part in the African Nations Tournament.

The Warriors have appeared at Afcon 2004, 2006, and 2017 and have not managed  to get past the group stages of the competition, for this year's edition, coach Sunday Chidzabga has set a target with the team to be part of the two teams to progress from Afcon's Group B.

The group is made of Uganda, DRC, and hosts tournament hosts Egypt.

“We want to break that jinx, we want to go further in the competition.

“We want to make history there,” he said.

The National Team started training on Monday at Yadah Hotel as part of the preparations for Afcon and the Cosafa Challenge Cup 2019.

“First day of training, we just loosened up since they were travelling.”

“For me the game we lost in 2004 is now history, so many things have happened between now and then.

“We have new players, and new tactics, this is a new game and I think if we put our cards together we can do something for the country

“It’s a very tough, we were involved in a tough qualifier game.

“In football we can only know the results after 90 minutes and we are not going out there to add numbers but to fight for the country,” said Mhofu.

Mhofu said the focus for now is the Cosafa Challenge Cup which begins on Sartuday 25 May.

Mhofu is yet to lose a match at a Cosafa Tournament.

“Cosafa is a good tournament and we have done well so far in the past tournament.

“I think for the first game we are going to use the some guys, who are going to play for AFCON,” said Mhofu.

“But when they leave to Nigeria the other guys will play the games and from the remaining five will follow others to Nigeria

“As for myself, I don’t believe in these target things, I only believe in approaching one game at a time

“If there is any pressure I don’t to be under pressure and I don’t want to put my players under pressure

“In football there is a time you lose, maybe we are going to lose one game.

"I would like to come home with the Cosafa trophy"
