7 Quick Facts About the Africa Cup of Nations 

The Total Africa Cup of Nations 2019 Competition begins on June 21 and ends on July 19, here are some quick facts related to the tournament:



1). Debutants at Afcon 2019 Egypt are Madagascar, Mauritania, and Burundi. 

2). Amongst all 'African' Football Associations, only 12 teams are yet qualify for an Afcon tournament since it started.  

The countries are; Gambia, Chad, Central African Republic, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Somalia,Lesotho, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, and South Sudan.

3). CAF added 8 more teams to expand the number of participants to 24 in the tournament to stiffen the competition. 

Since the start of Afcon, only 16 teams competed in each tournament.

4). Egypt will be hosting Afcon 2019 for a record 5th time in history. 

No other country has done so in the past. 

The other times were 2006, 1986, 1974, and 1959. Out of the four tournaments, Egypt won 3 and was position 3 in the other.

5). Essam el Hadary is the oldest player ever to feature at an Africa Cup of Nations tournament. 

The  goalkeeper played for Egypt against Cameroon, at age 44 and 21 days in 2017.

6). Afcon's All-time top goalscorer is Samuel Etoo (a striker who played for Cameroon). 

He played for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations inbetween the years 2000 - 2010, appearing in 6 tournaments during the period. 

He has 18 goals.

7). The youngest player ever to feature at an Africa Cup of Nations Tournament and score was only 16 years old and 93 days. 

He is Gabonian, and named Shiva N’zigou. Shiva played for Gabon and scored, against South Africa in the year 2000. South Africa won the match 3 - 1.
