Top Contenders for Afcon 2019 Hosting: Caf-Cameroon Unfit, Offered 2021 Chance

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations was supposed to take place in Cameroon, but due to delays in construction of stadiums, and the concerns in security, the Confederation of African Football on Friday, 30 November pulled out hosting rights from Cameroon.

And since, Caf has called for countries that would want to host the tournament to submit hosting-bids by December, 31_2018. However, Cameroon came through with a pledge through their Minister of Communication, Issa Bakary, saying preparations will be completed on time, in his statement he said, facilities for Afcon 2019, "which belongs to the Cameroonian people" will be ready, "at the right time, as promised by the Head of State" suggesting that construction & measures to 'secure' Cameroon for the tournament might still be going on.

Despite Cameroon's late pledge, Caf had already called for countries to submit hosting-bids by December 31, and South Africa were 'quite' earmarked in the call, SA was asked to seriously consider becoming 2019 Afcon hosts. Morocco is also said to be under serious consideration for hosting the cup as consolation for losing hosting in 2015 due to an Ebola-scare.

South Africa's, South Africa Football Association president, Jordan revealed that South Africa will make a bid to host the tournament, but only after speaking to the SA government, proving the business side in hosting Afcon. However, Jordan also revealed that it's the government that will have the last say on wether to submit a bid or not. South Africa last hosted the Afcon Cup in 2013 when Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in the final to become Africa's Champions. However, if SA's bid is to go through, as it stands, Morocco will prove to be stiff competitors as it's one of the few countries in Africa capable of hosting Afcon on short-notice. Morocco is reportedly keen to host Afcon 2019, hence the country's FA will be looking to submit a bid. Morocco has already gained regional back up, Egyptian Football Association board member, Magdi Abdelghani, said, "Egypt will not submit an application and I believe that there is a consensus for Morocco to host the competition".

"If Morocco is a candidate, it would be the best placed [to host Afcon]".

Caf will nominate & announce the 2019 Afcon hosts & the race is most likely to remain inbetween Morocco & South Africa, as Cameroon has already been offered a chance by Caf president Ahmad Ahmad to host the edition of Afcon to be played in 2021.
