African Football Fans lament CAF Champions league popularity

CAF Champions League ()

African Football Fans questioned the popularity of what’s supposed to be Africa’s second biggest football competition after AFCON. In a tweet (below) Nuhu Adams a sports journalist and staff writer at Ghana Soccer Net brought the matter on the table criticizing ‘journalists’ in African sports media for downplaying the ‘Total’ CAF Champions League in favor of European Leagues and the UEFA Champions League.
His tweet was received with supporting responses pointing out that African broadcasters belittle the continent’s biggest club competition, and instead promote European football which is highly sponsored; (Tweet below refers to the Ghanaian national tv broadcaster)

While the competition should bring a hype, it’s surprising that some fans of African soccer are not even aware of the competition. The Total CAF Champions League is Africa’s ‘own’ continental club football competition since 1964 handled by CAF (Confederation of African Football). In the manner of the UEFA Champions League, top four clubs from Africa’s premier football leagues take part in the competition, go through group stages, last 8, quarter final, the semifinal, and the final which is played at a neutral venue. The best club in the competition also has a chance of becoming the world’s best football club, because they get to take part in the FIFA Club World Cup where club champions in all six continental confederations compete. Current holders of the title are Wydad Casablanca (Morocco) and it is their second tittle, and the most successful club in the competition is (Egypt’s) Al Ahly which has held 8 titles. And Zimbabwe’s Dynamos has been runners up in the competition once (in 1998), in a number seasons dropping out of the last 8, and the quarterfinals of the competition. The CAF Champions League was quite popular in Africa before the widespread of satellite-tv in the continent and one of critics of its publicity pointed out to the reluctance of CAF in marketing the competition as compared to the bodies of European Leagues & the Uefa Champions League.
